As part of the MobiliTraIN project, BOKU researchers presented their research and organised a workshop for the 2026 Lange Nacht der Forschung. The educational workshop introduced children to fundamental concepts of ion mobility and mass spectrometry.
Ion mobility and mass spectrometry for all
Researchers Valeria Mandatelli (DC10) and Assoc. Prof. Tim Causon (DC10 Supervisor, BOKU) held a poster presentation for the group’s research on ion mobility at the Lange Nacht der Forschung at BOKU in Vienna. The poster also included a presentation on glycan analysis.
Along with BOKU research partners, the MobiliTraIN crew also hosted a workshop on mass spectrometry for children between 8-12 years old called “Massen erfassen”. Participants were provided with printed examples of molecules containing the molecule’s name, components, and a reference photo of the finished model. They were then tasked with rebuilding the model before weighing it on a kitchen scale. The exercise was designed to explain how mass spectrometry and ion mobility work. By the end of the workshop, participants learned how to distinguish isomers from isobars.
The Lange Nacht der Forschung is an open science event organized by BOKU University with presentations and hands-on science activities for all ages. The 2026 edition garnered over 1’800 visitors.
This event was hosted by BOKU University. MobiliTraIN participation was led by Assoc. Prof. Tim Causon with the support of doctoral researcher Valeria Mandatelli (DC10).
