Broadening Research Horizons: MobiliTraIN Secondments (DC8)

Welcome to the “Broadening Research Horizons: MobiliTraIN Secondments” series, where MobiliTraIN Doctoral Candidates (DCs) share their secondment experiences across different research environments. This series talks about how mobility contributes to skills development, knowledge exchange, and interdisciplinary training for young researchers.

Maosen Zhao at BOKU

October 2025 – December 2025

Maosen Zhao (DC8) has completed his secondment at BOKU University in Vienna, Austria, which took place from October to December 2025 under the supervision of Tim Causon and Stephan Hann.

During his time at BOKU University, Maosen focused on developing LC analytical methods targeting more than 200 environmental contaminants. In parallel, he carried out collision cross section (CCS) measurements using DTIMS and SLIMs platforms, enabling cross-platform CCS comparisons and establishing a planned strategy for CCS calibration between different ion mobility platforms. This work strengthened his expertise in ion mobility-mass spectrometry and laid the foundation for future methodological developments in environmental analysis.

The secondment also involved a fruitful collaboration with fellow MobiliTraIN doctoral researcher Valeria Mandatelli, supporting scientific exchange and methodological development across projects within the network. Building on this experience, Maosen will continue to collaborate with BOKU University and other partners to further advance the application of ion mobility mass spectrometry in the study of environmental pollutants.
