MobiliTraIN Introductory Days, Geneva 2025

The MobiliTraIN consortium gathered for the first time in person at the University of Geneva from 27th to 29th January 2025, marking the official launch of the project’s network-wide training activities. The “Introduction Days” brought together Doctoral Candidates (DCs), Principal Investigators (PIs), and industry representatives to foster collaboration and lay the foundation for future research in Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry (IM-MS).

A Dynamic Start to the Project

The three-day event, hosted at the University of Geneva, featured an engaging programme that combined scientific lectures, networking opportunities, and immersive Swiss experiences. The meeting began with welcome addresses by project coordinator Tim Causon (BOKU) and interactive icebreakers, allowing DCs and PIs to introduce themselves and their research. The agenda included insightful lectures on mass spectrometry techniques delivered by leading experts from MobiliTraIN’s partner institutions and the industry.

Beyond the scientific sessions, participants enjoyed a guided watch-making tour in Geneva, traditional dinners, and a visit to CERN, enhancing team spirit and cultural exchange.

Hands-On Learning and Industry Insights

A key highlight was the flipped-classroom activity, where DCs explored four core IM-MS technologies—Drift Tube Ion Mobility (DTIM), Traveling Wave Ion Mobility (TWIMS), Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulations (SLIM), and Trapped Ion Mobility (TIMS). This peer-led session encouraged knowledge-sharing and culminated in an interactive quiz that tested participants’ understanding.

Further bridging academia and industry, a panel discussion featuring three industry representatives provided valuable career insights. Speakers shared their experiences transitioning from academia to industry and advised DCs on acquiring broad skill sets for future careers in IM-MS.

Looking Ahead

The event also included the first MobiliTraIN Management Board Meeting, where elected DC representatives participated in discussions on project governance. Additionally, all training lectures were recorded and uploaded to accelCLOUD, ensuring accessibility for current and future DCs.

A huge thank you to all participants and to our host, Valérie Gabelica, for an outstanding agenda. The MobiliTraIN consortium looks forward to continued collaboration and scientific excellence in the years ahead.
