Leveraging ion mobility spectrometry for epitranscriptomics

Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (Montpellier, France)

Background

I began my undergraduate studies at the Università Statale di Milano in Italy, where I earned my master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology in March 2023. For the final year of my studies, I had the incredible opportunity to complete my master’s thesis at the University of Minnesota (USA). During this time, I discovered my passion for analytical chemistry while working in Silvia Balbo’s lab. My research focused on DNA modifications and their impact on human health, using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). This experience was invaluable, as it allowed me to enhance my technical skills and deepen my understanding of the field.

Prior to my time in the United States, I trained in Gabriella Roda’s lab at my home university, where I gained hands-on experience with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which laid the foundation for my later research.

After graduating, I decided to gain industry experience and took on a Technical Assistant position at a biotech company in Munich, Germany. There, I worked for a year, focusing on HPLC and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) methods for the analysis of fermentation products. However, I soon realised that I wanted to return to academia and pursue a research project with a public utility impact.

I was fortunate to find an opportunity within the MobiliTraIN network, under the supervision of Alexandre David. This project perfectly aligns with my background and aspirations, offering the chance to study epitranscriptomics for biomarker development. My passion for science continues to drive me, and I am excited to explore ion mobility spectrometry, a powerful tool for RNA modification analysis. I believe this research holds significant potential for advancing public health, and I am eager to contribute to such an important field.
